Closet design considerations for your custom-built closets
Installing custom closets and adding plenty of storage space not only increase the resale value of your home, they can also enhance your day-to-day life by organizing and de-cluttering your living space. In addition, creating customized closet space gives people a chance to introduce beauty, style, and substance to an otherwise overlooked, but vitally important, aspect of your home.
At In Touch Interiors, each custom closet project begins with a closet design consultation where one of our professionally-trained designer will visit your home, measure your space and itemize your belongings, then show you ideas and samples to help you create a style that's just right for you. Below are some of the things we take into account when designing your custom closet.
What items will go into your custom closet?
Life comes with stuff. When people add a home business, the kids' sports equipment, hobbies or inherited stuff to the mix, you need custom closets. And when it comes to closet design, size matters, so sketching shelf height, width and depth will help the designer do his thing. Heavy stuff might need custom surroundings, so including this in the closet design will help with the functionality of your closet. Hooks on closet walls for hanging stuff, appropriate space for round or cylindrical stuff, and an area for the odd squishy stuff all need to be sketched.
Your fashion style and how you handle your clothes impacts closet design
Clothing care encompasses many things - some items need to be hand laundered and laid flat to dry, while others must be dry cleaned. Some pieces hang well, but sweaters, for instance, get ridges on the shoulders from hangers, so people fold sweaters. If people have different or delicate needs in closet arrangements, custom closets could be the answer. Shelving for sweaters, racks for shoes, hangers for bags and umbrellas, tie racks, wooden dowels for suit coats and hat racks can all be built into a great closet. Couples sharing a closet needn't seek an attorney because they will have a fully customized closet which answers all their needs.
A good closet design includes closet accessories
Many people don't think of drawers in custom closets, thinking their dressers and chests of drawers are enough. However, the storage bins under the bed or in other closets can be unloaded and the photo books, papers and collectibles put into the drawers. With easy access and organization, closet drawers can free up space in other places, and maybe even put drawers in that space, too. Depth of the drawers can be designed to suit your needs and blend in with the customization of the closet. Other closet accessories that our designers incorporate into the closet design includes shoe racks, jewellery inserts, laundry hampers, tie and belt racks and pullout baskets.
Where should your custom closet be located?
If your bedroom, hall and linen closets are full, a location with ease of access and proper measurements will need to be considered. Some possibilities could include enlarging the closet in the foyer, or building custom closets into the laundry room or garage, as well as making space in a half-bath or underneath the staircase. The home office closet could be redesigned, or the pantry enlarged and customized. Of course, rebuilding existing closets into better organized or spacious entities will be considered during the closet design consultation.
